Introduction

The Ministerial Council founded the Information Technology Committee in the spring of 2004. The decision for its foundation was taken following an evaluation of the progress of the interventions for the Information Society. The evaluation demonstrated the need for a unified and cohesive strategy for Information Technology in Greece.

Initially, the Committee was responsible for strategy planning and IT development. Now, the Committee has become the common platform for political planning, coordination, monitoring and development of the Information Technology at a national level and especially in the Public Sector.

The Committee has the following tasks:

  • Setting the general directions and objectives of the Government’s policy on Information Technology in different fields such as education, research and technology.
  • Setting the context for the development and operation of the Public Sector’s Information Systems.
  • Supporting the public institutions in the development and productive operation of the Information Systems.
  • Promoting the application of the Information Society in the Public Sector through the respective Operational Program.
  • Planning the strategy for the convergence of R&T with the development of Information Technology on a national level.
  • Preparing the proposal for the reshaping of the institutional framework in order to ensure a more effective implementation of the “Information Society” operational program in the context of the 3d Community Support Framework (CSF).

The Information Technology Committee is responsible for developing Greece’s Digital Strategy for the period 2006-2013, as well as for the coordination of the public institutions’ actions and interventions concerning the use of new technologies and e-governance. The Committee’s objective is to closely monitor the implementation of the Digital Strategy by the public institutions, so that the “Digital Leap” will be materialized in the period up to 2013.

Statutory Framework

In 2005 the Information Technology Committee developed, for the first time in our country, an integrated Digital Strategy for the period 2006 – 2013.
