The access to the Information Society and to the opportunities it offers is a constitutional right of all Greeks citizens. However, the development of the IS in Greece has been slow because of the lack of cooperation between the state, the private sector and the citizens.

These three pillars play an important role in the completion of the Operational Program for the Information Society. However, because of the lack of cooperation between them the results have not been the expected ones. This dearth of cooperation was one of the reasons for the foundation of the Information Technology Committee, which is comprised by representatives of the state, the public and the private sector as well as representatives of the citizens, who are going to take advantage of the numerous opportunities and benefit from the IS.

The formation of specialized bodies, such as the Special Secretariat for the Information Society and the Information Society Observatory, was an unprecedented step towards the development of IT. Their role is to guarantee the best coordination and operation of the O.P and to secure that Greece will become a protagonist in the digital age.

The General Secretariats of the different ministries contribute greatly to the promotion of the IS through the development and implementation of electronic applications for the better and faster service of the citizens. Other institutions of the wider public sector, such as the National Research and Technology Network, the Institute of Technology and Computers etc, have also taken on some very important projects of the Operational Program.

The contribution of the Academic Institutions is indisputable. They promote knowledge and innovation, and provide the setting for the development of applications, which may facilitate our daily life sometime in the near future.

The Information Society cannot become a reality without the help of the market’s institutions such as SEPE, SEV, SESMA1 etc and of the projects’ contractors, since it is them who will implement the IS projects after all.
