Action Line Measures
Documentation, management, promotion of Greek cultural heritage

Measure 1.3 aims to promote Greek culture and heritage and to realise its economic benefits of through the use of ICTs. This includes actions which relate to the generalised use of the potential afforded by the IS, with directly economic, as well as scientific, educational, recreational and training aims.

In this context the following are foreseen:
  • Creating the necessary ICT infrastructure for the digitalisation and scientific documentation of cultural heritage and contemporary cultural creation, and development of the necessary information systems for administrative and scientific documentation.
  • Developing cultural information modes, creation and promotion of multi-lingual electronic publications with a Greek cultural content, electronic publications which promote the Greek language, and the creation of information points for the public using ICTs in museums and archaeological sites.
  • Providing incentives for the development of innovative services and products relating culture to other sectors of economic and social activity, with the participation of private agencies.

These actions are aimed at the Greek and international public, special cultural tourists and special categories of the public such as academic or professional groups related to culture, Greeks abroad, etc.

1. Infrastructure for digital cultural content

This includes projects and actions which will develop the necessary ICT infrastructure for digitising and scientifically documenting Greek culture. 

The results of these projects are aimed primarily at the global academic and educational community but at the same time there will be easy access to raw digital materials to generate secondary products and added value services.

For example, these projects include:

  • Implementation studies which tailor and customise general and specific functional and technological specifications for groups of projects and actions to be adopted in the context of the operation (e.g. adoption of joint methodologies and technological standards).
  • Development of geographical and thematic documentation units which will undertake to generate and maintain digital cultural content. 
  • Development of integrated raw digital cultural data collections (such as museum, monument collections, the corpus of Greek literature, historical and cultural archives and documents, biographical data and files of cultural activitsts, folk documentation, modern cultural events, etc.).


2. Documentation, utilisation and highlighting of Greek culture within the IS

The actions and projects in this category of operations form the cutting edge of the IS culture strategy for the years to come. This includes projects and actions which are aimed at the IS citizen and seek to promote Greek culture and cultural communication.  

For example, they include:

  • Development and promotion of online multilingual publications about the most important museums, archaeological sites and art galleries in the country. 
  • Development and promotion of online multilingual publications concerning complex topics which highlight and promote various aspects of Greek culture and national and international level. 
  • Development of multilingual educational-cultural applications on topics related to the cultural heritage and modern culture. 
  • Development of the cultural information hub ODYSSEUS into a Greek culture portal on the internet, a point of reference and source of cultural information in a way which ensures academic integrity, quality and multilingual presentation of the content. 
  • Development of information sites on the most important and most popular museums and sites in Greece and development of thematic websites.  Development and promotion of comprehensive digital cultural guides which will provide tourist information about cultural sights and sites in Greece. 
  • Development of an Online Greek Culture Museum which will consist of a set of individual thematic virtual museums and exhibitions accessible via the internet. 
  • Development of museums and perceptual exhibitions within archaeological sites and museums combining actual exhibits and digital media. 
  • Development of cutting edge information systems for the public at the most popular museums and sites. 
  • Development of broadcasting and promotional systems in real time for cultural events at locations around Greece where broadcasting to the general public is possible.


3. Economic utilisation – intellectual property protection

The objective of this category of operations is to develop, simplify and make it easier to implement actions which offer financial benefits to the wider cultural economy. At the same time these operations lead to improvement in the cultural services provided to citizens and will make it easier to develop activities which are related to utilisation of the cultural heritage and protection of intellectual property.
 
This category will finance actions related, inter alia, to:

  • IT systems and intellectual property right management tools 
  • Systems for economic utilisation of tangible and intangible cultural goods on global electronic markets. 
  • Automatic ticketing systems, public management and entry systems for major museums and sites.


4. Digital cultural products and applications in the private sector

The actions and projects in this category of operations seek to mobilise private resources to produce financially advantageous digital cultural products and services, indirectly seeking to generally bolster the domestic content industry in adapting to global IS standards. 

This category finances integrated business initiatives with a cultural objective and purpose which lead to direct financially utilisable results.
These initiatives are submitted in the form of business plans which will lead to:

  • The development of educational-entertainment-cultural applications for young people on topics related to the cultural heritage and modern culture. 
  • Development and promotion of financially exploitable online cultural content publications 
  • Development of hubs and thematic websites with cultural content 
  • Development of museum and perceptual exhibition spaces for Greek culture
  • Development of systems for economic utilisation cultural products and services on global electronic markets.
