| Characteristic Project: Modernising and extending the national environmental information network |
This project relates to providing services and related procurement activities to develop and install software for databases, GIS and web applications to input data, generate metadata and to installation of a network and infrastructure to ensure the necessary geographical basemaps can be generated.
Thanks to this project the National Environmental Information Network will be modernised and extended utilising internet capabilities, will better serve regional bodies and environmental agencies, will be bolstered with new data and procedures, will be extended in relation to its geographical scope, will utilise the SYZEFXIS interconnection and interoperability options with EIONET and other networks and will support national obligations to provide data to the European Union deriving from the European Environmental Agency and the relevant Directives.
Budget: € 4 150 000.
Measure 2.4 entitled ‘Regional GIS and innovative actions’ is being implemented as part of the Axis ‘Citizen service and improved quality of life’.
The aims of this measure are to prepare a strategy and action plan for the Information Society in each region, to encourage innovative pilot schemes concerning the development of InfoSoc applications at regional and local level and to establish and support geographical and environmental mapping and MIS at central, regional and local level and includes two types of actions:
- Creation of geographical mapping and information management systems by preparing digital maps as basemaps for general and thematic maps needed for development and management, administration and sale of digital data in electronic format. These actions seek to develop a national geographical information infrastructure to serve the administrative, social, environmental and development targets of Greece.
- Use if IT systems to cover specialised needs in the environmental and natural resources management, natural disaster management, public utility, and accident and emergency services sectors.
