Actions (Categories of operations) Scroll to Top

The effectiveness of interventions to upgrade educational system infrastructure, like those under Measure 1.1, require training of educational staff and the preparation of suitable teaching materials and learning tools.  The five categories of actions under Measure 1.2 attempt to achieve this. These include the following indicative categories of operations:

1. Digital educational content and software

The operations financed in this category generate educational content which will be used on computer and network infrastructure by instructors who have been trained for the purpose of substantively integrating ICTS into the educational process.  This category of operations relates to actions to develop cutting edge educational software using state-of-the-art technologies.

It includes developing, procuring, disseminating and promoting use of educational software for primary and secondary education in the following three ways: 1) Localisation and adaptation of existing (international) educational software. 2) Development of Greek educational software from scratch. 3) Development of educational suites with educational activities so that existing software packages can be utilised.

The aim is to cover the entire primary and secondary education syllabus with educational scenarios.  A condition for this is that the software produced is used and certified by the Pedagogic Institute with the main criterion being use in the educational process.

Attention should be paid to developing specially designed software packages or customisation of existing ones so that they match the specific pedagogical needs of the disabled.

  • Development of educational portals

The objective is to create reference sites for instructors, students and young people in general with quality educational content and to develop sites on the internet for communication, information and training purposes.  This also encompasses developing new portals or customising existing ones to meet the specific needs of the disabled and ensuring that they are environments supporting communication and cooperation with the wider school community.

  • Developing content and state-of-the-art telematic services in the educational process

Telematic services focus on use of ICTs in the day-to-day educational process and on distance learning.
The purpose of this operation is to design, develop, support and promote the use of telematic services for instructors and students at primary and secondary level, students, teachers and researchers at tertiary level. It includes:

  • Use of educational software and content in the day-to-day educational process
  • State-of-the-art telematic services for distributing digital content for the purpose of distance learning.

In this context, one particularly important action is development of educational multimedia software for ongoing training of instructors in new/emerging technologies with the aim of instructors obtaining continuous updates about new technologies and for suitable educational multimedia applications to be developed to assist in training them.

This type of software includes support for instructors so that they can better use technology in the overall educational process.

  • Digitising public library content

This project relates to selective digitisation of library content based on the contribution of that content to economic growth and cultural documentation and above all its potential for use in the educational process. The project also relates to setting up a central digital library accessible by all participating libraries.  It also includes connecting the digital library to online library catalogues.

2. Training instructors and certification

The purpose of this category of operations is to train instructors at primary and secondary level in using ICTs in the educational process and members of the academic and research community (tertiary level education) in using and effectively utilising ICTs in the educational and research process.

Operations in this category relate to the entire basic and technical educational community.  In order to implement what is a large-scale project by Greek standards, a special support mechanism for implementing it will be developed.

Particular emphasis will be placed on training 2 000 IT teachers.  Training actions for instructors relating to use of ICTs for disabled students will also be developed.

3. Support actions for IT systems at schools (HelpDesk) – distance learning / support materials offered over the web (e-learning modules)

The purpose of this category is to develop technical support mechanisms for IT systems within schools to ensure they operate without problems.  Technical support centres (helpdesks) will be set up which will be coordinated at regional and central level.

The key need is online support within schools for the teaching process focused around  the classroom and the school overall.

These actions seek to support instructors in integrating educational software into the overall educational process and utilising it properly.

Measures will also be adopted which are closely related to training and facilitate the acquisition of PCs by instructors and pupils, as well as measures concerning the structure and operation of schools so that the new computer and network equipment can be accepted, preserved and used effectively.
